A half hardy shortlived perennial, at maturity it will develop a woody base. This wonderful plant which has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Meritt (AGM)is in flower from May until October. It is perfect for either the back of the border with its flowering stems reaching a height of 1.5m or alternatively planted at the front allowing a view of the plants behind. It self seeds liberally and the resulting seedlings are often stronger and more drought tolerant than plants that have been transplanted. It attracts both bees and butterflies and as such is a welcome contributor to the wildlife garden.
Originating from South America this plant is not fully hardy to frost. To protect from a harsh winter leave stems on the plant until fresh growth appears in spring. Also helpful is the application of a protective mulch in Autumn.
